Poetry

Although I dabbled in poetry during the first two decades of my life (including a plagiarized piece which I passed to my high school girlfriend), my serious entry into the craft began during my seminary stint.

In a class on scripture, I learned about the importance of poetry in the early Judeo-Christian religion, including the use of mnemonics to assist the priests in memorizing the text. Enthralled by the use of language in a religious context, I wrote a poem about how early authors used alliteration and other uses of language to enhance the text. After leaving the seminary, I started taking creative writing classes, which led me to Professor Sanazaro. He stressed the importance of certain techniques and habits which further your ability to create poetry.

Thanks to him, I have been able to write many poems, of which a few I consider actually finished.

Thanks to his class, I was able to meet four other poet, who created a writing group that continues to meet weekly to this day. Our group published a book, Tongue Painting, in early 2002. We plan to publish another soon.
